Hornsea Boat Launch 28.10.2020

Weather forecast was supposedly bad but had to have my fix of the week with a day on the beach. Fresh Yellow Tails from Nic at East Coast Tackle, squid, peeler, slaps and bluey also at the ready. The morning started off with a small sole on yellowtail on a pulley pennel rig. Things were really slow, water had plenty of colour Westerly stiff breeze and low temperature and a decent sea on but still poor for the first few hours. There were plenty of anglers along the beach and from what I saw not much action anywhere. What was noticeable was the abundance of crabs about, they were stripping the bait in 5 mins. About lunchtime Steve Saville brought a small codling to the shore I had a few postage stamp flatties all on yellowtail so I decided to change rigs to a shorter snood and used wrapped squid sausage, pelted out about 90-100 yds onto the edge of the sand bank, waiting and waiting then a slack liner, took up the slack and could feel the resistance to onward and inward the resistance disappeared and I thought I had lost it only to see a Thornback come out of the surface, I then realised the reason for the lack of resistance must have been the ray was planeing through the water. This was my first ever Ray from the beach so I was well impressed. The rest of the day was less eventful with just small flatties and whiting. Still an enjoyable days fishing with fresh air and good company.
