So due to the forecast of big swells from Tuesday onward, we brought our weekly trip forward, Picked up some good lug from Craig at Northfields Cottingham. Roy couldn’t get a pass out so it was just Sav and me. Sensible start time, leaving Caistor at 07.00. Slow drive over the bridge with queues in the Tag lane which was a new one for me. Arrived at Hornsea 08.03am. Steve was already on the beach with gear in both pegs. Set one rod up with a two hook flapper, lug on each hook. Set the second rod up exactly the same but with smaller hooks and some Inovo Silicone beads to act as bait stops. After 1 hour nothing, tide pulling strongly to the South. Time to set up the new beach shelter, watched the videos on YouTube, they made it look like a blind man could do it, so I thought between us we should have it up no probs errrr No !! At first we thought there was a piece missing but eventually we worked it out just in time before the drizzle set in. I often wonder why they include tent pegs when they are designed for the beach ??
10.00am and my first fish, little dab size of a tea bag, how do they get a 1/0 and a worm inside their mouths ?? The pull was really bad by now, walking about thirty metres to the left cast out and by the time I walked back to my tripod my gear was running due South and this was with a 6oz SKM gripper.. 30 mins and another dab the same size, 10 mins later and the same. Meanwhile Steve had had a small whiting. The drizzle had turned to rain and by now everything outside the shelter was awash including me. A short break in the rain which was very well timed as I had set my shelter up about 5 metres too short and if a move wasn’t imminent things inside would be very wet also. Steve helped me move the shelter, must admit it moved better than the Type 1.
We both commented on some of the really positive bites we were getting but with no result, I personally think it was a rolling lead.
A small whiting just after 11.30 with 3 more in very short succession, meanwhile Steve had a codling just about a pound. I was hoping for some bigger lumps as had been caught in the matches held on the Sunday but unfortunately it was not to be. A few more very small whiting and it was 18.00hrs and totally drenched and ready for the off, Steve had 5 fish and I had 9, Gear back to the van, loaded up and on the road. Quicker journey then the inward one. Already making plans for next weeks outing, maybe a few tactical changes ?? who knows ??
